Scholarship Opportunities
The idea of paying for college can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Knowing the correct terminology is a great place to start.
- Financial Aid - money given or loaned to a student to assist in paying for college
- Grant - a financial aid award that does not have to be repaid. Grants are often need-based, but not always.
- Scholarship - a financial aid award that does not have to be repaid. Scholarships are often awarded based on merit or some kind of criteria. There are academic scholarships, athletic scholarships, and fine arts scholarships, just to name a few.
- Work-Study - a program that provides part-time campus jobs to students with financial need. Earned money can be used to pay for educational expenses.
- Loan - money that is borrowed from the government, the college, a bank, or some other institution that must be paid back, usually with interest.
Filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the first step in any financial aid offer.
