More than 230 MISD Students Earn Advanced Placement Scholar Awards
Posted 08/17/2015 04:05PM

AP Scholars logoMansfield ISD is proud to announce that 233 MISD high school students earned 343 Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the 2015 AP Exams. This is a 40 percent increase from the previous year when 166 students earned 279 distinctions.

AP courses are college-level classes available to high school students. AP exams are given after completion of the course. The highest score possible is a five, and students have the ability to earn college credit depending on the score earned on the exam.

AP Scholar awards are broken down into four categories, and MISD had students earn distinctions in each one. View a full list of each scholar here.

Three MISD middle schools (Worley, Coble, and Jobe) have an AP Spanish class for native Spanish speakers. Students take the same AP test as high school students. In these three campuses, the passing rate was 87 percent.

MISD saw increases across the board in 2015 AP exams compared to the previous year. There was a 21 percent increase in the number of exams, 13 percent more students took the exams, and the number of students who met criteria (scoring a three or higher) improved by 22 percent.

“We are pleased at the growing number of students to receive AP Scholar designations from the College Board,” said Marie Medina, Coordinator of Advanced Placement Programs. “Advanced Placement courses are equivalent to freshman or sophomore college courses, so it is always good to see that our students are excelling in challenging coursework.”

Under new law, Texas public colleges and universities will accept course credit from students who submit scores of three or higher on an Advanced Placement (AP) exam. Read more about the changes here.
