Twenty-six Mansfield ISD fine arts students have earned a distinction given to the top high school musicians in the state.

Eighteen MISD band students and eight choir students were named All-State musicians by the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA). According to TMEA, it is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive.

The young musicians undergo multiple rounds of auditions to achieve the designation.

Beginning each fall, over 70,000 high school students across the state audition in their TMEA region. A select group of students advance to compete against musicians from other regions in the area competition.

The highest-ranking musicians in the area contest, usually less than 2,000 students total, then qualify to perform in one of 18 Texas All-State ensembles in band, orchestra or vocal divisions.

The annual TMEA Clinic/Convention, at which the All-State musicians perform, will be held Feb. 9-12 in San Antonio. Concerts will occur on Saturday, Feb. 12.

In addition to the MISD high school students who will be performing, the Asa E. Low, Jr. Intermediate School choir was also selected to sing at the TMEA convention after submitting a stellar recording.
