Students in Mansfield ISD will join the country in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. Schools throughout the district will be observing the impact and contributions people of Hispanic and Latino cultures have made to the United States through lessons, activities and projects.
The timing of Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16, Sept. 18 and Sept. 21 respectively.
The national observance started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988. Learn more about National Hispanic Heritage Month here.
