Mansfield ISD has named its 2020 teachers of the year. The teachers were chosen based on their positive impact in the lives of their students and fellow staff members.
Brian Renbarger, from Della Icenhower Intermediate School, was chosen as the Elementary Teacher of the Year. Nathan Wood, from Ben Barber Innovation Academy, was named the Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Renbarger teaches fifth-grade English. Those who know him said he is known for putting a smile on people's faces and being a beacon of positivity to those he encounters.
"There are so many things that I could say about Brian Renbarger, but the one thing that stands out the most is that he leads with heart," said Principal Mendy Gregory.
Wood is a sports radio broadcast teacher who makes it his mission to have a special connection with each one of his students.
“He really knows his subject, and he knows how to deliver it to teenagers, which is never an easy thing; but he does it, and they adore him,” said teacher Rachelle Laux.
Every year, staff members at each of MISD’s campuses nominate the teacher they feel has done a stellar job at displaying excellence in education.
Two of those campus winners are then selected by a committee to become the elementary and secondary district teachers of the year.
Renbarger and Wood discovered they won the distinction at the MISD 2020 Virtual Employee Banquet, which was held May 14. They will go on to compete in the Education Service Center Region XI Teacher of Year competition and could potentially advance to compete for Texas Teacher of the Year.
