Mansfield ISD Receives U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR Recognition

More Than $1 Million Saved

MANSFIELD, TX — Mansfield ISD announced during the August 27 School Board Meeting it has received, for the first time, the 2013 ENERGY STAR Leader Improvement Award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency for improving energy efficiency by 20% across the entire school district.

Also announced was the district receiving 40 ENERGY STAR Building Certifications for 2012. To earn this award, buildings must rate in the top 25% nationwide for energy efficiency. Since 2006, Mansfield ISD has earned 153 ENERGY STAR Certifications, the most of any school district in Texas.

“We are extremely pleased to receive these awards from ENERGY STAR,” said Jim Vaszauskas, Superintendent. “To earn these awards and particularly the ENERGY STAR Leader Improvement Award for the first time is a tremendous achievement for the Mansfield ISD. It’s a testimony to the dedication of our staff, our Energy Specialists, our Facilities and Operations team a well as our partnership with Cenergistic in reducing energy waste.”

The cost of utilities is the second largest budget line-item for Mansfield ISD, and the prices for electricity, natural gas, heating oil and water have been steadily increasing. To combat these rising energy and utility costs, the school district entered into a partnership with Cenergistic to implement a comprehensive organizational behavior-driven energy conservation program throughout all its buildings and campuses. Cenergistic guarantees the conservation program will save taxpayer dollars. Since June of 2012 through June 2013, Mansfield ISD has saved over $1 million on its energy and utility costs.

“Our students, staff and faculty embrace the energy conservation program at our campus,” said Jeff Brogden, Assistant Superintendent of Construction Services.

“Each of us can make a difference through energy conservation, because people use energy, buildings don’t,” he continued. “We are part of a daily effort to improve the environment and save money organization-wide. There are dozens and dozens of changes, large and small, that we have implemented that are saving energy without affecting our comfort or educational goals. We have all gained a real sense of accomplishment from this ENERGY STAR recognition. Our students are learning, too, what it means to preserve precious natural resources.”
