Without CDL Class B

• CDL Class “B” License with “P/S” endorsement (current)
• DOT Physical or medical card (current)
• 20hr. School Bus certification card (current)

Step One: Go to any DPS office, ask for CDL Class “B” book.

Step Two: Take the following tests.

Section 14 (Special Requirements). Once you pass section 14, you will be given class “B” permit. The permit will allow you to take the remaining test and practice driving with a trainer. You are given 90 days from that point to finish the remaining five tests and driving test with a DPS State Examiner

• Sections 1-3 (General knowledge)
• Section 4 (Passenger)
• Section 5 (Air Bakes)
• Section 10 (School buses)
• Section 11 (Pre-Trip Inspection)

Step Three: Pass MISD Transportation level one performance qualification test. The test includes: Exiting out of the back door of the bus in 25seconds, physically stepping through an opened emergency exit roof hatch and walking to a parked bus on the parking lot and back on the second floor within three minutes.

Step Four: View all Transportation videos, sign up with Transportation for 20hrs school bus certification class and DOT physical/medical card. Management may get you a temporary certification card for six months if you have never drove a school bus before or if your certification has been expired over two to five years but you must take the 20hrs school bus certification within the six months the temporary school bus certification is current.

Step Five: Behind the wheel training with Transportation Trainer-The training will take six days (three hours each day).

These six days only prepare you for the license.

Day One: Transportation Orientation and wheel chair Training- 6hrs (This class is only for Transportation employees (Drivers/Attendants). It is not applicable to MISD coaches).

Day Two: Bus Basics Orientation (For all school bus drivers and coaches)

• Policies- (Dress code, cell phone, field trip paperwork, fueling , driving in the parking lot (amber/four way flasher usages, speed limits, CNG, child alarm system, camera system and accident procedure)
• Bus orientation-(belt and whistle, mirrors, emergency equipment, bus log book)
• Pre/Post-trip inspection (air brakes, inside and outside inspection, mirrors adjustment and danger zones.)
• Turning radius

Day Three: Bus Maneuver

• Recap pre/post trip
• Air brakes
• Turning radius
• Legal turns (left and right turns)
• Tail swing
• Parallel parking
• Backing

Day Four: Railroad Crossing/Loading and Unloading

• Recap pre/post trip, Air brakes, turning radius, legal turns (left and right turns), tail swing, parallel parking, backing
• Railroad crossing
• Loading and unloading
• MISD performance test introduction

Day Five: MISD Transportation Level Two Performance Qualification Test

• Recap pre/post trip, air brakes, turning radius, legal turns (left and right turns), tail swing, parallel parking, backing
• Railroad crossing
• Loading and unloading
• MISD performance test

Day Six: DPS Road Test Practice

• Air brake test
• Pre-trip inspection
• Loading and unloading students

• Straight backing
• Bus control
• Railroad crossing

Day Seven: DPS Road test day

DPS road test- The Transportation training department will contact the DPS office to schedule your road test and contact you. We will then take you and the bus to DPS for your driving test. Your driving test will be with a DPS Examiner.

While viewing all Transportation videos or taking the DPS written test, please get with Transportation to sign up for 20hr of certification classes and DOT physical/medical card. Transportation may get you a temporary certification card for six months if you have never driven a school bus before or if your certification has been expired over two to five years but you must take the 20hrs certification within the six months the temporary school bus certification is issued. Transportation will give you some paper work and pay once for your DOT physical and 20hr school bus certification card.
