Attendance Zone Review: Project 2020

An Attendance Zone Review for Mansfield ISD's continued growth was conducted April 2018 in response to the demographic report presented during the Dec. 19, 2017 school board meeting.

The review addressed the developing growth in the southern and southeastern portion of MISD and accommodate the district's newest campuses - Brenda Norwood Elementary School, Alma Martinez Intermediate School, Charlene McKinzey Middle School - being constructed under the May 2017 bond package.

An Attendance Zone Review Committee provided feedback in addressing the attendance zones.

Attendance Zone Updates

Due to rain delays during construction, the elementary, intermediate and middle school maps will not go into effect until the 2021-22 school year. The approved high school map will still go into effect for the 2020-21 school year.

Final Approved Maps

At the regular board meeting on Tuesday, March 22, 2018, the MISD Board of Trustees approved the proposed attendance zone maps recommended by the committee.

Lake Ridge High School Rezoning Option 2020 Applications

Zoning changes for high schools will go into effect in the fall of 2020. Each high school student is assigned to one of the board-approved school attendance zones according to the student's permanent residence.

Lake Ridge High School (LRHS) students that have been rezoned to a different campus in 2020-21 have the following two options:

Option 1 - Attend your newly zoned campus of either Mansfield High School or Legacy High School. Note: The selection of this option requires nothing further from the student as records will be sent to the newly zoned campus.
Option 2 - Complete and return an Option Application by March 15, 2020 to remain at Lake Ridge High School.
- LRHS Junior/Senior Option Application (students who will be enrolled in grades 11-12 for the 2020-21 school term)
- LRHS Sibling Option Application (students who will be enrolled in grades 9-10 for the 2020-21 school term)

Frequently Asked Questions for Project 2020

When will the three new schools open?

Brenda Norwood Elementary School, Alma Martinez Intermediate School and Charlene McKinzey Middle School were projected to be open in August 2020. However, due to an unprecedented amount of rain, construction was significantly delayed and remains behind schedule. To ensure that the buildings are completed, tested and meet all safety standards, the district is delaying the opening of these schools to the fall of 2021.

For students in elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school, when will the zone change take effect?

Will students be grandfathered into their current school?

Does a school’s academic or athletic performance influence where the lines are drawn?

Will schools be getting portable buildings?

Are the committee meetings open to the general public?

Why are Daulton Elementary and Spencer Elementary not being addressed in the rezoning?

The intent of the attendance rezoning is to set zones for the three new schools that passed in the May 2017 bond package and to relieve overpopulation at Mary Lillard Intermediate School, Danny Jones Middle School and Lake Ridge High School.

While enrollments at Daulton Elementary and Spencer Elementary are higher than other elementary schools in the district, Daulton Elementary shows to max out at 790 students in the 2024-25 school year, and a slight decline is projected to occur through the 2027-28 school year at Spencer Elementary.

What is the plan to relieve Lillard Intermediate and Jones Middle schools until the new schools open in 2020?

Will 8th graders at Jones Middle School have the option to stay in the Lake Ridge High School attendance zone?

If there is capacity at Timberview High School (THS), why not adjust the zoning and send some students to THS to relieve enrollment for Lake Ridge High School?

In August 2017, Timberview High became home to the district’s Early College High School. The program will eventually grow to an enrollment of 400 students. That means if Timberview’s enrollment is 1,900, the actual combined total will potentially be 2,300.

Additionally, as the southern portion of MISD continues to grow, it is likely that High School #6 will need to be in the south. Rezoning efforts try to contribute to stability over time as well as efforts to move the fewest number of students the fewest number of times.
