Credit By Exam

Credit by exam for acceleration provides a way for elementary students (grades 1-5) to take exams in the four core content areas to move up a grade level. For secondary students (grades 6-12). Credit by Exam provides advanced students an opportunity to earn credit in a course that they have not taken in school. Students must be enrolled and currently attending classes in MISD to be eligible for Credit by Exam for acceleration. Credit by Exam is free to any student enrolled in a Mansfield ISD school.

Mansfield ISD Credit by Examination Without Prior Instruction Testing Process

Step 1: Review Testing Information

Review the current testing calendar and testing information before applying to ensure proper testing and dates.

Step 2: Online Registration Application

Grades 1-5 Grades 6-12

Step 3: Campus Approval

Advanced Academics Department will contact the student's campus to seek approval from the Principal/Counselor
Counselors will verify school enrollment qualifications and is applicable, course prerequisites.

Step 4: Confirmation

If approved, the parent or guardian will receive an email notification from the Advanced Academics Department that the student is registered to test and will include details on the testing session, including day, time, location, what to bring, etc.
If not approved, the Advanced Academics Department will contact parent or guardian.

Step 5: Testing

The student takes the Credit-by-Exam test on the assigned date.

Step 6: Scores

After testing, the tests are shipped for scoring (either Texas Tech University or The University of Texas at Austin; Avant for LOTE CBEs). It takes approximately 3-4 weeks for our office to receive the scores. Once the scores are received by our office, we will send the scores to the campus who will contact the parent or guardian.

Students must be enrolled and currently attending classes in MISD to be eligible for Credit by Exam for acceleration. Credit by Exam is free to any student enrolled in a Mansfield ISD school.

Credit by Exam for Advancement Grades 1-5

Credit by Examination for Advancement (without prior instruction) is available to first through fifth grade students who wish to test for advancement to the next grade level. Information about Kindergarten acceleration (skipping Kindergarten) is available from elementary counselors.

Elementary students must take exams in Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and Language Arts. Students must demonstrate mastery of 80% or higher on each test to be eligible to take the next test. Students who demonstrate 80% or higher mastery on all four tests will be considered for advancement to the next grade level.

Full grade acceleration is only offered at the beginning of the school year. Testing for fall placement is offered in July (there is no grade level placement during the school year). Parents should be aware that there are no exceptions available for students to test at any other times and should plan summer vacation schedules accordingly.

There is no charge for testing of Mansfield ISD students. Testing is conducted at the RL Anderson Complex unless otherwise notified. Results will be sent to campus counselors after the scoring is complete. Parents can obtain the test results directly from the campus counselors.

Students in grade 6 - 12 who wish to earn credit for a course in which they have had no prior formal instruction may test through credit by exam. This CBE registration is not for credit recovery and student must have prerequisites fulfilled already before testing. Students must demonstrate 80% or higher mastery on the exam in order to earn credit. If credit is awarded, the examination score will be recorded on the student’s transcript, computed in the credits toward graduation, and calculated in the student's overall grade average and rank in class.

Testing for grade level and/or core course placement is offered in July only (there is no grade level/core course placement during the school year). Parents should be aware that there are no exceptions available for students to test at any other times and should plan summer vacation schedules accordingly.
