Advanced Courses in MISD
At MISD, Advanced classes (formerly Pre-AP) gives students the opportunity to practice (at the appropriate level) skills which will enable them to be successful in the upper level AP classes.
To help students prepare for the demands of the Advanced Placement Program, all MISD Intermediate and Middle Schools (grades 6-8) offer Advanced courses inmost of the disciplines, as well as freshman and sophomore courses at MISD high school campuses.
Advanced courses are strongly recommended for students interested in entering the AP program, for they act as a bridge between on-level and AP courses. Any student can enroll in and Advanced course.
Advanced classes will expose students to the type of expectations and activities required by the AP program. Advanced classes lay the foundation for success not only in the upper level classes, but also ultimately in college course work itself. Successful Advanced students are typically task oriented, proficient readers who are able to set priorities with regard to time and responsibilities. Parental support of the program also plays a key role in the success of these students.
MISD Middle Grades Advanced Math Pathway
MISD believes that every student deserves the opportunity to advance academically as far as the student’s ability, motivation, and effort can take them. While MISD is an open enrollment district for Advanced and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, this guide serves as a roadmap for students and family members to illustrate the advanced math pathways that MISD offers.
With the passage of Senate Bill 2124, students who perform in the top 40% on the STAAR Grade 5 Mathematics assessment will automatically be enrolled in the 6th Grade Advanced Math course and will enter the advanced math pathway. For 6th grade students who move into the district with no 5th Grade Mathematics STAAR score available, the beginning of the year NWEA MAP performance will be used to determine advanced math pathway placement. A parent or guardian may opt the student out of automatic enrollment by completing the opt-out form and returning it to the appropriate school personnel.
Please see the MISD Middle Grades Advanced Math Pathway Guide for more information about the district’s accelerated mathematics courses and curriculum.
