Ron Whitson Agricultural Science Center
The Ron Whitson Agricultural Science Center, located behind Tarver-Rendon Elementary School, was developed in October 2014 to enhance the district's agricultural and science courses.
The center creates a hands-on environment for all students, provides additional housing of animals for our growing Mansfield FFA program and serves as science and nature center for all grade levels.
About the Facility
The $3.2 million facility, designed by Huckabee & Associates, Inc, includes two 10,000-square-foot barns with configurable animal pens and an 11,000-square-foot Show Barn and Arena.
The Red Barn Learning Center is a display/exhibit area for students. The south side includes new pen extensions for viewing animals, the west features an outdoor classroom with a teaching wall, a horse pen to the north and a chick and fish hatchery and fingerling tank.
The property also includes a 400-square-foot greenhouse, spacious pastures for grazing, three ponds and meandering nature paths.
The Ag Science Center is affectionately named after Ron Whitson who spent nearly 30 years teaching agriculture classes (27 years within Mansfield ISD). For the past several years, Whitson has continued to serve public education as a Statewide Career and Technical Education Coordinator.
He serves on the Boards of Directors of several state a national organizations including the Texas FFA Association, HOSA – Texas Association, Texas DECA, Texas FFA Foundation, National Consortium for Health Science Education, National Partnership for Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security, and the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas.
