Military Enlistment
If you plan to serve in the United States Armed Forces after high school, we can provide guidance and support. Every branch of the military sets its own standards for enlistment.
Citizenship and Residency:
U.S. Citizens and some non-citizens can join the military. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently and have a U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
Age Requirements:
For most branches of the military, you must be 17 to enlist.
Education Requirements:
You must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Contact your school counselor to register for the ASVAB test. You must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) to enlist in the military.
Physical and Medical Requirements:
A medical exam is part of the enlistment process to determine if you are healthy enough to serve in the military. Each branch requires recruits to pass a physical fitness test as part of the enlistment process.
How to Enlist:
Contact a military recruiter to learn more about the specific requirements for each branch of the armed services. Once you enlist, please submit a copy of your enlistment paperwork to your school counselor.
Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC):
JROTC is a class sponsored by the military services that does not recruit students for the military; rather it emphasizes leadership training, selfless service, citizenship, responsibility, and respect. Students may enter this class at any grade level. Students will have opportunities to compete in activities such as Color Guard, Drill Team, Academics, Orienteering, Physical Fitness, and many others. Uniforms are issued at no cost to the student and are worn one day per week. JROTC is a PE substitution.
