Dear
Parent or Legal Guardian,
I
am excited to have your son/daughter in my German class
this year. It is important to me that he/she is successful,
and I know that working together as a team, we can help
him/her grow and develop to his/her fullest potential.
Y
ou will help your son/daughter
most by encouraging them. Praise him/her for the progress
you see and demonstrate a positive attitude about his /her
ability to learn German. Ask to see and hear their
work often. Most students who perform poorly do
so because they don't consistently study or finish their
homework. Learning a second language requires daily practice
and independent study.
SUPPLIES:
Each
day your son/daughter needs to bring paper, something to
write with, a German dictionary (Langenscheidt's
is recommended), and a German “ notebook. ”
Students are required to write and keep
all their work in their Heft, a 1 ½ inch 3 holed
binder. Please note: this binder will be for German
use only . It will be taken up and graded at random
on a periodic basis and it is his/her resource book throughout
his/her study of German. Additionally, a pencil is sometimes
required for tests and map pencils are often needed in the
course. Please note that students who do not have their
own dictionary with them in class usually do poorly in the
course.
GRADES:
Students are sent a written Progress Report every 3 weeks.
Student's Grades will test proficiency in five language
skill areas: Listening, Speaking, Reading
, Writing, and Culture.
Tests are periodic, concentrated exams that test the student's
mastery of skills on a given topic. Listening/Speaking grades
often include memorized role-plays, pronunciation, reading
aloud, and listening comprehension. Spoken German will be
used 50% to 75% of the time in year one, 75% to 85% year
two, 90% year three and 95% years 4 and 5. Daily
grades cover vocabulary, homework, notebook, and quizzes.
The Nine Week's Average consists of 30% tests, 30% listening
and speaking activities, 20% daily homework and quizzes
and 20% Final Exam.
The
German Department offers extra
credit through participation in the German
Club and fieldtrips, competitions, and including Sportsfest,
Winterfest, Sprachfest, Deutscher Samstag and State competition.
Please see upcoming events in the Announcements above.
