New York Times #1 Best-selling author, Rick Riordan visits T.A. Howard Middle School

New York Times #1 Best-selling author, Rick Riordan visited T.A. Howard Middle School on March 12. His visit was the culminating event after both the seventh and eighth grade at Howard read Riordan novels in their Language Arts classes.  Seventh grade reads Lightning Thief (the first novel in the series) and eighth reads Sea of Monsters (the second).  Mr. Riordan was invited to reward the students for their enthusiastic effort on these books (he visited several other schools in our district as well).

Rick Riordan with TA Howard students

Rick Riordan is the author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series http://rickriordan.com/author.htm.  The first book in the series is currently in production for a major motion picture to be directed by Chris Columbus (director of the first two Harry Potter movies).

Student reactions:

Mr. Riordan received a rock star reception at Howard.  Librarian Amy Toombs practically had to hide him under a jacket to get him to the cafeteria unscathed.  Two students even sneaked backstage to get signed their books between presentations!

"He was so funny!  I bet he was great to have as a teacher." — Carson R.

"I was excited when I met him and took a picture with him.  He was cool!  I didn't think he would be down to earth, I thought he would have a big head." — Brittany W.

"I was excited.  I saw you [the librarian] take the picture outside the library door and I was like, He's here!  Whoah!" — Charles D.

"He was hilarious.  All his accents were cool."  — Jackie F.

"He was different than I thought he was.  More energetic."  — Marc B.

"He was very inspiring" — Jacob C.
