Pasta for Pennies Campaign

December 1, 2008 - We are kicking off a Pasta for Pennies campaign to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We will be collecting money from 12/1-12/19/08. Olive Garden will donate a Pasta Party to the winning classroom. Tristen & Taylor Dasch are our Honored Heroes for this campaign, both former Boren Bears. Tristen began his battle with Leukemia in March, 2004, while in 2nd grade, and recently had a bone marrow transplant.  Tristen’s heroic bone marrow donor was his older brother Taylor, a freshman at MHS. Tristen will be in 7th grade at Wester MS when he recovers and can get back to school.

Please send loose change, checks made payable to LLS, or donate online at www.active.com/donate/syntx/symjlbo, to help find a cure for all blood cancers. Please be sure and indicate your child’s teacher if you donate online so it can be added to their totals.

5th Annual Jivin' in the Gym
January 2008 - JL Boren Physical Education classes will get jumping this month. The 5th Annual Jivin' In The Gym will take place January 15, 16, and 17.Jivin' at the Gym The event came to be because P.E. classes rarely have any visitors. “We wanted a way to encourage parents and grandparents to visit our class,” said Cheryl Stranahan, P.E. specialist.  “I heard from a teacher friend in another distict who teaches her students dances and invite parents, grandparents etc. to join the students for a physical education class.”

The visitors are taught the dances along with the class and students and adults all dance together. The dances are line dances or hand jive-type actions where partners are not needed so everyone can participate whether they have guests or not.

“It has been a huge success,” said Stranahan. “We have approximately 450 students involved in grades 2,3,4, and each year have about 50-60% parent participation. We are always involved in fitness and dance fulfills our TEKS [Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills]. The students absolutely love to have parents visit and are so proud to have their parents in class with them.”
