Three Ben Barber Innovation Academy students are now state champions after winning gold medals in their event at SkillsUSA. The state competition was held on April 7-8 in Corpus Christi.
Audrianna Lanham won the gold medal in Advertising Design. Austin Whitt won gold in CNC Mill Technician, and Jacob Dawson won gold in Carpentry.
"Winning gold means you are the best in Texas! Each of these students have put in the extra time preparing for their contests," said Gene Schramme, construction technology instructor at Ben Barber Innovation Academy. "Their advisors have contributed hours of training, coaching and paperwork to prepare, register, develop and enhance each of their experiences."
SkillsUSA is an organization serving students who are preparing for careers in health, technical, skilled and service occupations. Its mission is to enhance the lives and careers of students, instructors and industry representatives as they strive to be champions at work.
"SkillsUSA allows students an opportunity to excel in their passions, in career fields that interest them and further network with industry supporters," Schramme said.
The three high school students will join over 6,000 other state champions from around the country to take part in the National Leadership and Skills Conference on June 19-23 in Louisville, Kentucky.
