Novel Letter

      1. Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

The following information is very important for your child's success in English IV.

Throughout the semester we will be reading several novels that are not located in your child's literature book. Students are expected to purchase, borrow, or check out a copy of these novels for class. Students must have a copy of the first novel by Monday, August 22, 2005. At that time, students will be able to store their books in my classroom. The novels we will be enjoying and the dates students will need to have them by are:

      2. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie               Monday, August 22nd

Lord of the Flies by William Golding                                 Monday, September 19th

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe                                 Monday, November 7th

We will be reading two additional novels this semester, but they will be an independent study.   I will give students a list of books from which to choose, or they will have the opportunity to choose a book on their own with teacher approval.

These dates are tentative starting dates for our novel units.   Please note that the novels are due in class by that day, but we may not start the unit until later.

Students are also responsible for a few supplies they will need during the semester.   These supplies are as follows and are due in class by Monday, August 22nd:

        2- 1-subject spiral notebooks

        1- Set of markers

1- Set of highlighters with at least 4 different colors

1- Box of tissue or 1 roll of paper towels (for extra credit)

I greatly appreciate your cooperation.   If you need to contact me, please feel free to email me at whitdu@mansfieldisd.org (during school hours will ensure a quicker response), or call the main office at 817-473-5650.

        Sincerely,

        Mrs. Whitefield

Makeup and Late Work Policy

Makeup work is your responsibility!   Class time will not be used to tell you what you missed. You will need to see the calendar located at the front of the classroom to get your makeup assignments.   The time period for makeup work will be the number of days missed plus one. Again, it is your responsibility to turn in your makeup work.   I will not remind you!   Absolutely NO late work will be accepted!   This is a departmental policy.

Bathroom Privileges

Each student is expected to use the 10-minute pass period to use the bathroom.   Students should not interrupt instructional time for a bathroom break.   If an emergency situation occurs, please try and consult the teacher.

Food and Drink

Food and drinks are a privilege and are permitted in class as long as the drink has a lid.   Food should be of the “snack type” and not consist of a four-course meal!   This privilege will only stay in place as long as the room is neat and clean at the end of the block.   In closing, each student is treated like a responsible young adult.   Therefore, it is up to the student to keep up with their work, make-up work, missing assignments, etc
