COL JOHN SWAHN

Welcome to my page.   I am a retired Army officer, and I am the Senior Army Instructor for the Mansfield High School JROTC “Tiger Battalion.”  Our class periods are organized as Companies and we teach the first 3 class periods of the school day.

JROTC is designed to prepare high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities and privileges as American citizens.   JROTC provides a four year course of instruction that stresses the importance of graduating from high school and benefits the cadet, our community and our nation.   The focus of the JROTC program is not to recruit students for military service.   JROTC does emphasize several things that are directly associated with the Army in order to teach leadership, selfless service, responsibility and respect for authority – primarily taking care of the uniform and wearing it once a week, and drill & ceremonies.   JROTC strives to make students better citizens and motivate them to successfully complete high school – then continue that success in all future endeavors.

Our program also offers extracurricular activities such as Color Guard, Drill Team, and Physical Fitness Teams.   Because of the diversity of subjects covered in the JROTC curriculum, up to 8 State credits can be earned by a student who successfully completes our 4 year program.   These credits are described in detail in the Mansfield High School Course Description Book.   To be in the JROTC program, a student must be at least 14 years old, be able to participate in the physical demands of the curriculum (drill and physical fitness training), and be able to accept authority from instructors and cadet upper classmen.

Commander of the “Tiger Battalion” for SY 2005-2006 is

Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Webster and our

Battalion Sergeant Major is Cadet Command Sergeant Major John Lopez

So far this school year, we have been able to involve our cadets in a wide variety of activities: Drill Meets, Orienteering Meets, numerous Color Guard performances and community projects, the Fort Worth Veteran's Day Parade, a field trip to Lockheed-Martin, two elementary school carnivals, and a service learning project at Mary Orr Intermediate.  Still to come is our last Drill Meet of the year in Mesquite, our Military Ball in April, our end-of-year picnic in May, and our Awards Ceremony in May.  We are deeply involved in the planning and preparation for Summer Camp at Fort Sill, OK. - and we are awaiting word on additional allocations we have requested.  For more information about our program and these activities, I encourage you to check Sergeant Watkin's web page.
