STREP THROAT

STREP
While strep throat itself is sometimes no more severe than the viral sore throat that accompanies the common cold, it can be followed by two more serious strep-related illnesses:
Rheumatic fever
Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, a kidney disease.
SYMTOMS
Symptoms of strep throat include sore throat and varying degrees of tonsil swelling, with or without white pustules, usually (not always) accompanied by fever and redness.
If your child complains of the above symptoms, you should contact your family physician.
The most common diagnostic technique is the throat culture. Other tests are available that can provide diagnosis in a matter of minutes.
Children treated for strep throat are generally presumed to be noncontagious 24 hours after antibiotic therapy has begun.
PROCEDURES
If you or anyone in your family has had strep throat, please remember the following:
1. Complete all medication.
2. Dispose of all toothbrushes 24 hours after starting medication.
3. Wash hands frequently.
