SHIGELLOSIS
Shigellosis, or Shigella, is a common infection caused by a bacteria. Since it is contagious, it can be passed from person to person. It often spreads among family members, especially children. Sometimes a large outbreak can occur with many people getting sick within a short time.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?Diarrhea which may look bloody. Sometimes, stomach cramps, nausea or vomiting may occur.
HOW DO YOU GET SHIGELLA?The germs leave the infected person in the feces (bowel movement). The germs must then get into another person's mouth and be swallowed to make him or her sick. This happens when people do not wash their hands well after a bowel movement and then fix food. Children get their bowel movement on toys which other children put in their mouths. Parents, daycare workers, or babysitters do not wash their own hands well after changing diapers or potty-training.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET SICK?It usually takes 1 to 3 days to get sick. Sometimes it may take up to 7 days.
CAN ANYONE GET SHIGELLA?Anyone can get shigella, and getting it once does not protect you from getting it again.
ISIT SERIOUS? Some people only have mild diarrhea for a day or two. Others feel sick and have diarrhea for about a week. Very young children and very old people, may need to be hospitalized due to dehydration. A person with symptoms which last more than a day or so should see a doctor.
CAN SHIGELLA BE TREATED?Yes. Usually the doctor will prescribe antibiotics.
HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF AND OTHER FROM SHIGELLA?Good handwashing is the best protection. Always wash your hands thoroughly after a bowel movement, after diapering or potty training, and before eating or fixing food. If you or another family member has diarrhea, all family members need to be especially careful about handwashing. Since it is possible to get Shigella from food you eat outside the home, you may not be able to avoid it altogether.
