POISON IVY

WHAT IS POISON IVY
Poison Ivy dermatitis caused by contact with poison ivy. The plant is easy to recognize, in as much as its leaflets are always in groups of three and rather thick and shiny. The toxic substance is found only in the sap. The sap, fresh or dry is found on practically all parts of the plant. There is no absolute immunity to poison ivy though the susceptibility varies enormously even in the same individual.
SYMPTOMS
Reaction begins one to four days after exposure to the plant. Early symptoms - itching, redness, small blisters. Late symptoms - an increase of all early signs plus larger blisters and generalized weeping of the skin. Duration of symptoms vary from several days to two - three weeks. Most common on hands, forearms, and face.
HOW TO TREAT
Wash thoroughly after exposure (usually too late when discovered at school). Use calamine lotion or Lubriderm on dry lesions. Try to prevent scratching. Loose dressings may help.
Call your doctor if poison ivy is severe or becomes infected.
