[October 13, 2010]
Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed today, October 13, 2010, to be the first ever Texas Education Human Resources Day. The Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators (TASPA) initiated this effort to recognize the important contributions made by human resource staff to public education.
TASPA's 2010 President Tamira Griffin, executive director for human resources in Plano ISD, says HR team members are often in the background, not seeking credit for all the great things they do. The least of which, she says, “is providing expertise that supports each district in attracting and retaining quality staff. Without our most important asset – people – none of our districts would be able to fulfill the goal of providing an outstanding education for all students.”
The Governor's proclamation message is that “human resource professionals in Texas schools play a vital role in ensuring our students get the best education possible.” Education reformers in the 1980s and education reformers today recognize that student achievement can only improve to the extent that we have high-quality teachers. Human resource professionals play the key role as recruiters and gatekeepers for those who are hired to work in our schools.
The human resource department touches the lives of everyone in a public school system: the teachers, the students, the administrators, the bus drivers, and the cafeteria workers. These professional plays a major role in getting the best teachers in the classroom, preventing costly lawsuits, controlling benefit and payroll expenses, and providing a warm welcome to new arrivals in the MISD.
Thank you to the Mansfield ISD HR staff for all they do for this district. |
