Updated September 8, 2009 at 4:30 pm – President Barack Obama’s speech to the nation’s school children was to encourage our students to stay in school and apply themselves to their studies. All students could benefit from a message that supports students to stay in school. It is our hope that parents will sit down with their children and view President Obama’s speech. MISD is providing a link to the speech on this Web site for your convenience.
To respect those parents who believe that any message from a sitting President should not have been shown during the school day, parents can write a note opting their students out of participation in viewing the speech. Please send a note requesting your student not to view the speech to your school’s principal no later than the start of first period Monday, September 14, 2009.
The District will delay any instructional use in our social studies classes of the Presidential address until Monday September 14 to allow our parents to engage their students in a discussion of the speech and allow time for the opt out option.
The principal of each school will provide an alternate location for those students of classes who provided a parent note that are viewing the speech to continue their studies until the speech concludes.
President Obama’s address will not be a graded assignment; therefore students who do not watch the speech will not be given an alternate assignment. The President’s speech was motivational and therefore should be seen as such.
Mansfield ISD remains committed to providing our students with enriching educational opportunities and appreciates our parents continued involvement in their students’ learning.
