At the November 17 regular board meeting, the MISD Board of Trustees approved establishing Frontier High School at Ben Barber Career Tech Academy.
Frontier High School
In the fall of 2010, Mansfield ISD will open Frontier High School, a new and innovative fifth high school option for students from Legacy, Summit, Timberview and Mansfield. Frontier High School will be located within the existing Ben Barber Career Tech Academy.
The students in the class of 2012, this year’s sophomores, will have the option next year to take all courses during their junior year at the new “school-within-a-school” and after completion of their senior year will graduate from Mansfield Frontier High School.

Resembling a college campus student union, a common area or the “CUBE” will give students a comfortable setting to work on projects or online courses. In addition, students will each be issued a laptop, will have the opportunity to leave high school with 12 college hours, will participate in an internship and Capstone project their senior year.

What is Frontier High School at Ben Barber?
Frontier High School at Ben Barber is a state of the art, innovative high school campus that focuses on post high school graduation preparatory programs. Students have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, industry-recognized certificate, professional licensure, and college hours.
Will students from the other District high schools still have access to courses at Ben Barber Career Tech?
Yes, students from the traditional high schools will still be able to take classes at Ben Barber but will graduate from their home campuses.
Who is eligible to apply for admission to Frontier High School?
All students from Legacy, Mansfield, Timberview and Summit who are currently sophomores and will be juniors during 2010-11 school year are eligible to apply.
How do I apply?
An application will be available in early December. If applications exceed total number of available spots, qualified applicants’ names are then sent to a lottery pool where student names will be drawn. All applicants will be notified of their status after the drawing.
What happens once I am selected into Frontier High School?
Students whose names are drawn will be asked to return a letter of intent indicating that they are accepting the placement at the new school.
What if I am not selected?
Students whose names are not drawn will be ranked by the order in which the names are drawn. If a selected student withdraws their application prior to the start of school, the first student on the alternate list will automatically be bumped up and so on. All students not selected will still be able to take classes at Ben Barber but will graduate from their comprehensive high school.
Is transportation provided?
Yes, transportation is provided by the MISD Transportation Department. Exact bus stops and times are determined by transportation after all students have declared their intent to attend Frontier High School. Some programs do require that students provide their own transportation. (i.e. Internships, Community Service, etc.)
Will students at the Frontier High School be able to take AP and/or online courses?
Yes, students will be able to take online AP courses, dual enrollment courses and other online courses.
