Terry Murphree from Glenn Harmon Elementary School was recently named the 2010 ESL Teacher of the Year by the Bilingual/ESL Education Association of the Metroplex.
The Bilingual/ESL Education Association of the Metroplex, or BEAM recognizes an ESL (English as a Second Language) and bilingual teacher of the year. Districts represented by BEAM in the DFW area are eligible to submit a candidate as bilingual teacher of year and one for ESL teacher of the year. Three judges score candidates using a comprehensive rubric following strict criteria.

“Ms. Murphree uses sound strategies for her ESL students to be successful,” wrote Harmon Elementary Principal, Sharon Ferguson. “Ms. Murphree thoroughly enjoys the challenge of having non-English speaking students. It is a joy for her to watch the students emerge from virtual silence into English conversations as a result of her intervention.”
Terry Murphree has organized the Mansfield Area Parental Support System (MAPSS) for the Mansfield ISD since 1999. She plans, budgets and recruits teachers to assist her with the parent nights throughout the year. The purpose of MAPSS is to develop a parent education program designed to foster and enhance
early reading development. |
