Roger Shupp, a bus attendant for special needs students, received the latest Mansfield ISD Heartbeat Team Award during a surprise presentation at the transportation department. Roger was selected for his fundraising efforts and organizing volunteers to assist a student and his family at their home.
District Superintendent Dr. Bob Morrison, along with Transportation Director, Mr. Charles Stone, and other department and administrative personnel, surprised Roger at the operations complex on Thursday, May 27. Roger Shupp is a bus attendant for special needs students.
In November, 2009, Roger Shupp and 17 bus drivers and their families spent a Saturday installing windows, cleaning and constructing a porch at a student's home.
Roger Shupp saw the difficult living conditions of one of his students on his routes and decided to help the situation. In two months' time Shupp had raised enough funds and volunteer support to make some significant changes at the student's home. They put in new storm windows as well as a new sliding glass door. They also constructed a wheel-chair accessible patio deck and ramp for the student's grandparent.
“The Heartbeat is the district and he embodies everything we want in our drivers, and the teachers and the spirit of Mansfield,” said Michelle Bratton, fellow Transportation employee, of Mr. Shupp.
“He saw a need, he filled the need. The student absolutely was living in deplorable conditions. He raised the money, he found the workers, and they generated enough to work on this house and help this family out. What more could you want? That's just awesome.”
“It makes me feel very special and surprised,” said Roger after receiving the Heartbeat Team award.
The Mansfield ISD administration is proud to present the May 2010 Heartbeat Team Award to Roger Shupp for his extraordinary efforts and planning to help out a student and their family.
