MISD also congratulates John Roberts for receiving the Unified Partner of the Year. The Unified Partner of the Year Award is given to one person in the state who demonstrates what a unified partner should be. It is a special award because there is only one given in the state each year. There are thousands of unified partners, volunteer positions, which range in age from 8 years thru adulthood. John David was chosen from a very large pool of athletes across the entire state of Texas. This would be equal to someone being named state champion in another sport except it has more to do with character and volunteer ability then sports ability. This is the first time in Mansfield ISD's Special Olympics history that someone has received a state award.
From the Special Olympics Guide, "Unified Sports is a program that combines athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to form sports teams for training and competition. Unified Sports dramatically increase inclusion of people with mental disabilities into the community by breaking down barriers that have historically kept these people apart."
