[January 4, 2007] January is School Board Recognition Month

SBRMMansfield, TX – Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed January School Board Recognition Month and Mansfield ISD (MISD) is joining other districts across the state to gratefully acknowledge local trustees’ unfailing commitment to our communities and schools.

“Our board members serve to help make public education the best it can be for all of our students,” said Mr. Vernon Newsom, MISD Superintendent. “In a time of changes and challenges, they develop policies and make difficult decisions on complex issues that affect our communities and the lives of students.”

A School Board Trustee's job is to establish a vision for the education program, design a structure to achieve that vision, ensure schools are accountable to the community, and strongly advocate continuous improvement in student learning. That job entails an endless string of meetings and school functions to attend; reams of reports, agendas, proposals, and other information to read and study; and a host of difficult decisions to make.

Mansfield ISD Board Members – Dan Phillips (President), Gale Moericke (Vice-President), Sandra Vatthauer (Secretary), Terry Moore, Beth Light, Michael Evans, and Mike Leasor – contribute hundreds and hundreds of hours each year leading MISD without receiving any compensation for their efforts.

“These dedicated individuals deserve recognition and thanks for their unfailing commitment to the continuing success of our students now and in the future,” said Newsom.

The MISD board will be recognized at the regular school board meeting Tuesday, January 22 at 7:00 PM in the MISD Board Room, 605 E. Broad St., Mansfield. Prior to the meeting, the Ben Barber Career Tech Academy Culinary Arts students will honor the board members by making and serving them a gourmet dinner. Seven Elementary campuses have each adopted a board member and have prepared various ways to thank them for their dedication and service to the district.

Board Trustee Gale Moericke was made the Grand Marshal of the Accelerated Reader (AR) Parade at Tarver-Rendon Elementary on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. The AR Parade is Tarver-Rendon's academic tradition for students who have achieved a new certification level on the Accelerated Reader program.
