Mansfield ISD's Ben Barber Career and Technology Academy took a leap forward with the opening of a new Student Minor Procedures Laboratory, funded with a $25,000 grant from Methodist Mansfield Medical Center. The new lab will ensure health occupation students at Ben Barber get a head start on their medical career.
The lab simulates scenarios students would face if employed in a physician's office or clinic. “We will be able to teach them assessment skills, as well as procedures such as suturing, EKG, and phlebotomy, just to name a few,” says Larry Bailey RN, BA, BSN, HSTE, Academy chair for Health Science and Biomedical Technology at Ben Barber. “Learning theory behind why we do things in health care is vital, but being able to couple it with hands-on teaching greatly enhances the learning experience and prepares students for going into the hospital setting for their first clinical experience.”
The new lab and equipment will be used by students in the Health Science II class and also be the primary lab for the Health Science III intern students. The materials purchased with the initial grant include two ICU-quality hospital beds for the hospital lab along with five wall-mounted units to simulate a true hospital room (with compressed air, suction, water, and oxygen outlets), two exam tables, two lamps, two wall-mounted otoscope/ophthalmoscope units, and two phlebotomy (blood-drawing) chairs.
“Methodist Mansfield Medical Center is pleased to offer its assistance to the Ben Barber Career Technology Academy's innovative Student Minor Procedures Laboratory,” Methodist Mansfield President Laura Irvine said. “We hope this new lab shapes students’ medical careers by giving them a real-world perspective and experience utilizing medical equipment and performing procedures.”
“Ben Barber Career Tech Academy is the only dedicated high school career and technology academy in the area that combines a dedicated health sciences educational model and curriculum with the latest technology to teach future nurses and doctors. We are so proud to have it here in Mansfield so close to our hospital,” continued Irvine.
