In order to qualify for the Energy Star recognition, a building must score a rating of 75 or better. The EPA rates the performance of buildings on a scale of 1-100 relative to similar buildings nationwide using EPA's national energy performance rating system. The rating system accounts for the impact of weather variations, building size and location. Energy StarBuildings rating 75 or greater and maintain good indoor air quality and lighting levels may qualify for the ENERGY STAR. A school with a rating of 75 signifies that the school performs better than 75 percent of similar schools across the country.

Energy Star is best known as a label for products, such as appliances, that meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). But the Energy Star also identifies superior energy performance for America's commercial and industrial buildings.
