Eight MISD high school students joined others from around the state displaying their work and honing their talent during the Texas Art Education Association/Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) April 12-14 held at University of Houston-Clear Lake.
Students had the opportunity to not only exhibit their art, but also to discuss and analyze their work with art professionals. A panel of jurors evaluated each state entry to determine the degree that each work demonstrated originality of concept, technical expertise, understanding of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and the interpretation of the student’s stated intent. Over 1,400 students qualified for the state event.

Since 1994, the Texas Art Education Association has sponsored the Visual Arts Scholastic Event. To qualify for the state event, students create art in their art classes for a regional event held in February where they are interviewed by a certified juror. The work is evaluated on a standards-based rubric and the students’ understanding of the art processes involved in the development of their artwork. A set percentage of art works with Superior Ratings, or a Rating of IV, advance to the state event.
Those receiving a Superior Rating, or Rating of IV, at the state level receive the State VASE Medallion. The state jury panel then selects Exemplary Gold Seal Winners from those receiving the Superior Rating.
The students receiving awards at the state competition will receive School Board Commendations at the May 22 school board meeting. |
