[May 16, 2007] District Announces Professional Award Winners

Mansfield, TX – At the 2007 Mansfield ISD Employee Reception, the district announced the winners for Teacher of the Year, Above and Beyond and Extra Mile awards.

Teacher of the Year
This year, the staff of each campus selected a Teacher of the Year for the District. Six finalists were chosen: three to represent elementary teachers and three to represent secondary teachers. All six finalists were recognized at the 2007 MISD Employee Reception. The recipients of the Teacher of the Year award go to Amy Cunningham for elementary and Kathy Meek for secondary.

Teachers of the yearAmy Cunningham (pictured far right) is a reading specialist at Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary. This is Cunningham’s first year in MISD. She is an MISD education foundation grant winner. In addition, she has had the experience of teaching all elementary grade levels at other school districts in Texas.

Kathy Meek (pictured near right) is a reading specialist at T.A. Howard Middle School. Meek has taught mainly reading in Texas and Oklahoma since 1975, and has won many honors including the Governor’s Excellence in Education award on the floor of the Texas Legislature on behalf of her school.

Both teachers will be submitted to the Regional Teacher of the Year competition. Beyond the regional competition teachers will be considered for the Texas State Teacher of the Year and the National Teacher of the Year honors.

District Awards
In addition to the Teacher of the Year, MISD announced its recipients of the Mansfield ISD Above and Beyond and Extra Mile awards.

Extra Mile awardThe Extra Mile award is a district award that honors individual educational professionals for their exceptional efforts in going the extra mile to ensure outstanding learning takes place in the schools.

This year’s recipients of the Extra Mile award are: (pictured L-R) Daryl Swinney from Worley Middle School; Michelle Fagan from Summit High School; Shawn Smith from Daulton Elementary; and Casey Lambert from J.L. Boren Elementary.


Above and BeyondThe Above and Beyond award is a district award that honors individual educational support staff for their exceptional efforts in going above and beyond in their contributions and service to the students and staff of MISD.

This year’s recipients of the Above and Beyond award are: (pictured L-R) Sandy Wheeler from Mary Orr Intermediate; Mary Jean Steinmetz with the Department of Instruction; Howard Forsberg from transportation; and Jennifer Jones from Janet Brockett Elementary.

Mansfield ISD would like to congratulate all of this year’s professional award winners for their hard work and dedication.
