John Goins was awarded the Mansfield ISD Heartbeat Award Wednesday, May 2. Associate Superintendent Dr. Claude Cunningham surprised Goins while on break at the MISD Job Fair with the award, a t-shirt and a cookie bouquet.
Goins is the teacher of the SUCCESS program, a special education class at Mary Lillard Intermediate School.
During the winter break, Goins wanted to be able to give one of his students an item off their wish list for Santa. One of his students wanted a bed. After purchasing the bed and bedding, Goins decided to personally deliver the bed and assemble it for the student. On top of that, Goins was able to motivate a student to successfully read and use Braille, when over the past years of education, the school system has been unsuccessful. These are some of the examples of how after one year within the district, Goins has been able to impact the lives of students.
“In a setting where behavior often becomes the primary focus of instruction, Mr. Goins has provided a therapeutic environment in which students are focused on academics because their behavioral issues are under control,” said Mary Lillard Intermediate Principal Donna O’Brian. "In fact, each of Mr. Goins' students has progressed markedly under his direction and now attends general education classes successfully with minimal supports."
During his downtime, Goins works on his masters degree in education leadership, tutors students in math and volunteers as the campus chess club sponsor.
The Mansfield ISD Heartbeat Team Award recognizes employees who display heart in their lives and inspires other district employees through their actions. Only district employees are able to nominate Heartbeat members. One winner is selected each month during the school year.
