| Normally the Mansfield ISD Ben Barber Career Tech Academy (BBCTA) is occupied by high school students. But during the summer break, younger students take over the campus and discover the interesting learning opportunities of the school.
MISD offers special summer courses for any MISD student that is enrolled in sixth, seventh or eighth grade for the next school year. Not only do students get the chance to get out of the house and learn something new, the camp helps introduce students to the facilities and some of the unique courses BBCTA has to offer.
Some popular courses this summer include:
Hammer-Hammer, Saw Saw provides students with the knowledge about drafting principals and woodworking. This summer students are working on creating a laminated cutting board made from pecan, red oak, white oak, ash, and maple wood.
Discover Engineering is a course that uses professional engineering computer programs to teach students how to build, sketch and make models.
Video Camp teaches students how to create their own newscast or TV show. Students get the chance to use the Ben Barber television studio, run cameras, teleprompters, audio, control board or be the on-camera talent. After learning computerized editing, the students will walk away with the video that they created.
CSI: Ben Barber allows each student to become a crime scene investigator. Students will learn the step-by-step procedures for criminal investigations and the investigative process from start to finish. In addition, students will learn about fingerprinting, crime scene photography, sketching and crime scene search.
The camp began June 4 and lasts for two weeks Monday – Thursday from 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM.
Ben Barber Career Tech Academy is located at 1120 W. Debbie Lane, Mansfield.
