[July 17, 2007] No Shots - No School: Back to School Immunizations

Students who are not up-to-date with the state mandated immunizations will not be able to start school in Mansfield ISD on August 27, 2007.

Parents should ensure that all shots are taken care of now, well before the start of school. "While we do not want any child to miss school," says District Health Services Director Ted Cross, "it is imperative that children get immunized. It is the law." He adds, "You should do that now and avoid the long lines at doctor's offices or at the health department."

For information about services through the Tarrant County Health Department and scheduled immunization clinics, please call 817-548-3990 Address 536 W. Randol Mill, Arlington, Texas 76011.

(Recommended)
Menactra (Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine) protects students 11 years of age and older from Meningitis. It is available from primary care providers. MISD encourages you to immunize your children to protect them from meningitis, but the vaccine is not currently a school requirement.

Exemptions
The law allows (a) physicians to write a statement stating that the vaccine(s) required would be medically harmful or injurious to the health and well-being of the child, and (b) parents/guardians to choose an exemption from immunization requirements for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief. The law does not allow parents/guardians to elect an exemption simply because of inconvenience (a record is lost or incomplete and it is too much trouble to go to a physician or clinic to correct the problem).
