On January 11, Mansfield Timberview High School junior Diane E. was named one of two 2007 Rubottom Scholars by the World Affairs Council of Greater Dallas/Fort Worth. Diane will attend the Annual Conference of the World Affairs Councils of America in Washington, D.C. beginning February 1 with all expenses paid.
After hearing about the World Affairs Council of Greater Dallas/Fort Worth's opportunity to apply for the Rubottom Scholarship, Diane paired up with Timberview teacher Jim Benton to be her sponsor.
Diane was selected as one of 30 semi-finalists from public and private schools across North Texas to be interviewed for the scholarship. Due to the highly qualified applicants, the decision to name one student was impossible. Therefore, the council decided to award two scholarships this year, and Diane was one.
Diane is an active leader in Timberview Speech and Debate activities, competes in UIL Current Events, and is co-chair of the Student Council scholarship committee.
The World Affairs Council is a nonprofit organization formed to expand local public understanding of international affairs and U.S. foreign policy. The theme of its 2007 National Conference is Bridging the Desert: The Middle East in the Next Decade. The Rubottom Scholarship honors the service of Ambassador R. Richard Rubottom, Jr., retired diplomat and former SMU professor, and is normally awarded to one student in North Texas interested in global issues.
