[February 15, 2007] School Custodian Named Heartbeat Winner

Evangelina Herrera, the custodian at Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary School, was surprised Thursday, February 15 by Superintendent Vernon Newsom who awarded her the Mansfield ISD Heartbeat Award.

Herrera goes above and beyond the call of duty at Mary Jo Sheppard, and she does it with a smile on her face. One time she helped translate for a Spanish-speaking parent during an ARD meeting. She has been known to stay late and help set up for meetings or night programs even though the school has three night custodians. When a student feared they threw away a pair of glasses at lunch, Herrera volunteered to check the trash. The list goes on, but it is apparent that everyone at Mary Jo Sheppard appreciates the hard work and diligence she puts forth at the school.

Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary Principal Gary Manns said, " She is dependable, energetic, and always smiling. She could probably bench press more than me, the way she flips those cafeteria tables up ."

The Mansfield ISD Heartbeat Team recognizes employees who display heart in their lives and inspires other district employees through their actions. Only district employees are able to nominate Heartbeat members. One winner is selected each month during the school year .
