On February 3, students from Ben Barber Career Tech Academy [BBCTA] represented Mansfield ISD in the District Seven UIL DECA Competition. District Seven is known as one of the largest districts in the state with over 2000 members. DECA is a "student run" organization for students enrolled in marketing classes at the high school level. Over 1000 students competed for the right to advance to the state level competition, which will be held in Corpus Christi the second week of March 2007.

BBCTA had 15 students, double the amount from last year, advance on to the state level with hopes of advancing to the National level in May. The students were required to pass a rigorous written exam and then compete in a role-play competition in front of industry judges.

The following students will represent the district at the state competition:

Ryan Mullins, Christopher Marzoq, Chris Donavon, Christina Joines, Ellison Nichols, Jameson Gillespie, and Kayla Marsh advance d in Sports and Entertainment Marketing Team Decision Making.

Clayton Halaska, Emily Linton, and Sterling Dodd advanced in Hotel and Lodging Management

Jaqui Fairchild and Ellen Natchke advanced in Restaurant Food Service Management.

Sarah Lewis and Jessica Ledeburh advanced in Marketing Management Services and Quick Serve Restaurant Management

Brenda Padilla and Jaqui Fairchild participated in pre-convention competition with a written event sponsored by the Marketing Educators of Texas and advanced to the next level.

In addition, Jameson Gillespie, a freshman at Mansfield High School, was elected Vice President of District Seven, and Emily Linton, a junior at Mansfield High School, was elected secretary.

Fundraising is underway to help the students with the cost of the next level of competition. Anyone wishing to make a donation may send it to DECA Competition at BBCTA.

BBCTA is located at 1120 W. Debbie Lane, Mansfield, TX 76063.
