[February 5, 2007] MISD Salutes School Counselors

National Counselor WeekMansfield ISD celebrates National School Counseling Week on Feb. 5-9 in recognition of our 56 counselorswho work with students every day.

In honor of National School Counseling Week, Mansfield ISD salutes the dedicated individuals who help the students to achieve their full potential and continued success. MISD school counselors serve as facilitators that guide students toward happy and healthy futures.

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), is celebrated to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact that counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

Mansfield ISD counselors work as part of the campus teams to assist all students in achieving school success and in becoming responsible and productive members of society. Through the four program components of guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support (Texas Education Code §33.005), MISD counselors:

  • Collaborate with teachers, other campus and district personnel to enhance students’ academic, career, social and personal development;
  • Help students strengthen their abilities, interests and talents;
  • Assist  students in setting healthy goals;
  • Work with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world.

“Our school counselors are a lifeline in our schools—between the classroom and home — working in partnership with parents,” says Andrea Hensley, MISD’s Coordinator of Guidance and Counseling.

“The counselors work with students to realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic goals for themselves,” she adds.

MISD school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree and special training in guidance and counseling.

“The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total MISD educational program,” Hensley says. “During this week, we want to thank all our counselors for their service to our students, staff and community.”
