History of Veterans Day

MANSFIELD, TX - Mansfield ISD announces 2014 Veterans Day observances at various campuses. (Please note: This list will be updated as additional campuses share plans for events.)

Elementary


J. L. Boren Elementary
– Boren’s Veterans Day Program will be from 8:30-9:30 on November 11th.  The Mansfield Police Department will do the flag ceremony. Quentin Myers, MISD Staff and excellent Saxophonist, will perform the National Anthem. Children from all grade levels will perform songs they have learned in music.  Boren will provide breakfast for all Veterans that attend from 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., in the Gym.

Louise Cabaniss Elementary – Louise Cabaniss Elementary will have a Veteran’s Day Celebration the evening of Tuesday, November 18th, following their PTA meeting. The Cowboy Chorus, Cabaniss Elementary’s choir, will perform a brief selection of patriotic songs to honor and thank our Veterans. A few Third Grade students will read their essays inspired by this holiday. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. The campus invites parents and Community Members, to take a stroll through the main hallway to view the display of Cabaniss Elementary staff’s loved ones that have served in the military.

Imogene Gideon Elementary – Gideon will host a breakfast for Veterans, in the library, from 7:15 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.  The students who bring guests will join them in the breakfast, along with PTA and CAMP (Computer, Art, Music, PE) teachers.  Cynthia Nealis, Gideon Music Teacher, will sing for them, and introduce the Veterans.  The last 45 minutes will serve as a time to mingle and allow the Veterans to share their stories.

Anna May Daulton Elementary – Daulton will be holding a large Veteran Day Celebration on Tuesday, November 11th.   The campus will first honor the Veterans with a PTA sponsored breakfast in the gym starting at 7:20am.  The program will be followed with a public recognition ceremony in front of the school starting at 8:05 a.m.  During their event last year honoring Veterans, over 100 Veterans were related in some way to our students or past Daulton students.  The campus is proud to have returning Veterans that come back to their ceremony even though their children have moved on to Intermediate Schools.  Lake Ridge High School Band provides music during the ceremony, while the Daulton Choir provides special songs for the Veterans.  All students will perform the Star Spangled Banner.  The campus event grows in numbers each year, with City Council Members from Grand Prairie also attending.

Carol Holt Elementary – Holt Elementary will honor Veterans at a reception at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 11th, in the Cafeteria.  During the reception, invited guests will enjoy snacks an opportunity to visit with students, and then at 2:30 p.m., the program will begin.  4th Graders will perform “For the Red, White, and Blue.”

Thelma Jones Elementary - Thelma Jones Elementary will be hosting a Veterans Day program. Veterans will be served coffee and donuts at 7:45 a.m., followed by a program at 8:00 a.m., for parents, students, guests, and teachers. Guests are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue and all Veterans are asked to wear their uniforms. Don Cottle, United States Army Veteran, will be the speaker. Performances will be The Timberview Celebrities under the direction of Ekena Wilkins, and the Mansfield High School Ensemble Band under the direction of William Ludlow.

Annette Perry Elementary – Perry Elementary will honor Veterans on Tuesday, November 11th.  The campus will wear RED, WHITE, AND BLUE, and following the 8:00 a.m. bell, all students will immediately gather around the flag poles in front of the building.  Perry has invited family Veterans to come dressed in their Dress-Blues and meet us at our flag poles.  Following a flag ceremony and pledges, everyone will have a moment of silence.  Lauren Kenerly, Music Teacher and the Perry Choir Club will lead everyone in the National Anthem.   The campus will do announcements and then bid farewell to their Veterans and guests.

Nancy Neal Elementary – Neal Elementary will observe and celebrate Veterans Day on Tuesday, November 11th, beginning at 9:00 a.m., the entire student body will form an American Flag outside on the front drive, different grade levels will be dressed in red, white, and blue respectively.   A video shown during the morning announcements will depict the symbolism and the importance of our national anthem.  The campus will steam Armed Services theme songs during the day.  Also, student family members, currently serving in the Military or Retired, will be invited to join their student at lunch.  Lunch will be served at decorated tables on the stage.  On Friday, November 7th, at 7:45 a.m., Neal Elementary will be inviting any service member to attend in uniform, and they will recognize them during the campus “Family Time,” where the staff and students gather in the gym and interact, dance, and celebrate the week.   During this time, the campus recognizes students and student teams (houses) for their work during the week.   Some Parents regularly attend family time.
 
Martha Reid Elementary – Reid Elementary teachers will assist the students during their Enrichment Classes in the gym, to honoring Veterans, and those currently serving in the Military, along with parents and some very special guest from a local Retirement Home.  Morgan Farr, Music Teacher, Deanna Lemke, Art Teacher, along with Kelly Dowden, in charge of the Power Point presentation, and Mary Costa, who will help with coordinating the students and parents.  Each grade level will perform songs, dances, speeches, and show displayed art work on a ‘Wall of Fame’ that honors Reid Family Members that have served or, that are currently serving in the Military.

Performance Schedule:
2nd Grade: 9:05 a.m. – 10:10a.m.
Kindergarten: 10:20 a.m. – 11:20 a.m.
4th Grade: 12:00 p.m. –1:00 p.m.
1st Grade: 1:10 p.m. – 2:10 p.m.
3rd Grade: 2:20 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.

Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary - Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary will be hosting a Veteran’s Day Parade on Friday, November 14th, at  8:30 a.m.  The Veterans will be treated to coffee and donuts at 8:00 a.m., followed up by the parade.  Students with a participating Veteran or a photo of a Veteran/soldier will march in the parade as well.  Other students will be lined up in the hall as they pass by with patriotic music playing on the intercom.  

Elizabeth Smith Elementary – Smith will be hosting a “Bring a Veteran to Lunch” day to commemorate Veteran’s Day.  Students are encouraged to invite family members that are veterans to have lunch with them and each grade level is preparing a song to sing during their lunch times.  Lunch times run from 10:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Tarver-Rendon Elementary – Rendon’s program will be Thursday, November 6th at 2:00 p.m.   1st, 2nd and 3rd Graders will each sing a different patriotic song, the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will post colors and they will have a Guest Veteran Speaker, who after serving active duty is currently in the reserves.  The whole school is working on a Wall of Honor in which students are bringing pictures of family members who have served in the Military. 

Roberta Tipps Elementary – Tipps Elementary has invited Veterans to attend their program for the entire school at 8:30 a.m., on Tuesday, November 11th, in the gymnasium.   The Cub Scouts will present colors and the 4th grade choir will be singing patriotic songs.

Intermediate


Cross Timbers Intermediate School
– Cross Timbers will be recognizing Veterans Day on Monday November 10th.    Beginning at 8:00 a.m., breakfast will be provided for Veterans that have students in their family attending CTIS.  Both the Veteran and their student are invited to the breakfast.  At 8:45 a.m., in the cafeteria both 5th and 6th grades will participate in a program honoring our Veterans.  All Veterans and others in the community are invited to attend.   

Mary Lillard Intermediate
– 5th Grade Social Studies students in Kara Roth’s class will recognize Lillard Intermediate family members that have served in the Military.  Students will complete forms and attach photos about a family member that is a Veteran.  During class, each student will share their papers to the class, and these will be displayed in the hallways.  Also, during class, Ms. Roth will present a PowerPoint to explain the full meaning of Veterans Day.

Asa Low Intermediate – along with Mary Orr IS and Mansfield High School will host a concert honoring Veterans at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 11th, in the Claude Cunningham Performance Hall at the MISD Center for the Performing Arts.

Mary Orr Intermediate – along with Asa Low IS and Mansfield High School will host a concert honoring Veterans at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 11th, in the Claude Cunningham Performance Hall at the MISD Center for the Performing Arts.

Middle


James Coble Middle School –
Attention all Veterans:  Please join us on our front patio (by flag poles) for a ceremony in your honor at James Coble Middle School on Tuesday, November 11, at 8:45 a.m. After the ceremony we will be providing refreshments in our front foyer.  Please come out and let us Thank You for your service to our great country!

Linda Jobe Middle School –Students and Staff will be honoring veterans with a Band and Choir performance in the Cafeteria at 9:30 a.m.

Danny Jones Middle School – Danny Jones Middle School will be celebrating Veteran’s Day on November 11, 2014, with a breakfast for all DJMS parents or relatives who are active duty or served in the armed forces. The breakfast will begin at 8:00 a.m., in the Library. The Veterans Day Program, hosted by the student body, will begin at 9:15 a.m. in Gym A; performances include the DJMS Band, led by Eric Bolden, Director and Jenni Herzberg, Assistant Band Director, and Choir, led by Mark Husband, Director. Mr. Dameon Gray, principal of Thelma Jones Elementary School and former U.S. Army Engineer Officer, will speak to the DJMS student body. The campus would like to cordially invite anyone to attend.

Brooks Wester Middle School
– The campus will honor Veterans by hosting a Breakfast at 8:15 a.m., in the Library.  Both 7th and 8th Grade Students will lead the Veterans Day Program at 9:00 a.m., in the Main Gym.

Rogene Worley Middle School – Worley will be hosting a Flag Raising at 7:45 a.m., on Tuesday, November 11th, with a light reception immediately to follow.   A group from their choir will sing as a band member plays Taps.  Worley will also have a short interview and video with staff members who are Veterans.  They will play the video after announcements; also a slide show of student family members who served, or that currently serve in the Military, was created and will play during lunch.

High School


Mansfield High School
– along with Asa Low IS and Mary Orr IS will host a concert honoring Veterans at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 11th, in the Claude Cunningham Performance Hall at the MISD Center for the Performing Arts. The MHS Color Guard will open the Choir Concert at the Center.  All JROTC members of the Choir will perform the concert in uniform as well. MHS JROTC is participating in the Fort Worth Veterans’ Council Veterans’ Day Parade. The MHS Color Guard is supporting J.L. Boren Elementary School’s Veterans’ Day Assembly at 1:30. p.m.

Lake Ridge High School – The LRHS Band will honor Veterans at a morning performance at Anna May Daulton Elementary.

Legacy High School
 
1. During the week of November 3-7th, the student council will highlight each branch of the Military by providing important information to students about that branch of service.
 
2. On the morning of Tuesday, November 11, 2014, there will be a flag raising ceremony at 7:10 a.m., in front of the school.   The campus will honor all veterans at that time.  Also, the campus will honor the Veterans who paid the ultimate price with the playing of TAPS.  The ceremony will conclude with the JROTC Commander giving a short talk about the importance of Veterans Day.
 
3. Legacy Student Council Teen II students are conducting interviews with the Veterans on their campus. During 4th period on Veterans Day, teachers will show their classes the STUCO interviews.
 
4. Legacy will be hosting a special luncheon at the campus for community veterans during all 3 lunch periods. Students are encouraged to invite their relatives who are veterans.
 
5. The Student Council will create a “Wall of Honor” with pictures and information of Legacy Teachers, who are Veterans, as a way to honor their dedication and service to this great nation and their commitment to the students at Legacy High School.

Summit High School – Summit’s Veterans Day Celebration will be Monday, November 10th from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., in the Lecture Hall.  The campus will honor veterans, as well as the families, of those veterans who have served or that are still serving our country.  The Junior ROTC and the Culture and Climate Team will sponsor the event.  Many Veterans including student’ family members have been invited to participate in the event.   Summit’s Patriotic Program will honor Veterans with special recognitions to the different branches and wars served by the participants.  Refreshments will be available for them to eat as well as a time for them to mingle and share with each other.

Timberview High School – Timberview's AFJROTC marches in the Dallas Veterans Day Parade each year.  They matched in the Fort Worth parade for their first 5 years, and they’ve marched in the Dallas parade the past 5 years.  The Dallas Veteran’s Day Parade theme this year is, “Honoring Our Wounded Veterans.”   The Parade is in downtown Dallas and starts at Union Station and ends shortly after reaching the City Hall where the cities VIPs will be viewing.  The parade starts with a massing of the Colors in front of City Hall at 11:00 a.m., and ends around 12:30 p.m.   The Timberview AFJROTC have been supporting the Fort Worth or Dallas Veterans Day parade for the past 9 years, (Ft Worth parade from  2005-2009 and the Dallas parade from 2010 -2014, since the school opened in 2004.   The AFJROTC will post the school flags as a unit before leaving and if time permits, the cadets will take them down as a unit. The Timberview Drill Team, the Celebrities, will be performing at Thelma Jones Elementary School’s Veterans Day program on November 11th.

MISD Center for the Performing Arts - Mansfield High School, Asa Low Intermediate School and Mary Orr Intermediate School, will host a concert honoring Veterans at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 11, 2014, in the Claude Cunningham Performance Hall at the Center for the Performing Arts. The MHS Color Guard will open the Choir Concert at the Center. All JROTC members of the Choir will perform the concert in uniform as well.
