TIGERS OPEN DEFENSE OF STATE TITLE WITH WIN AT GRANGER

Fort Worth (AP)-  The fall prep golf season began in customary fashion as high school boys teams across the state of Texas and other states competed in the 14th Annual Bart Granger.  The tournament, named in memory of former Paschal golfer Bart Granger, is the largest high school tournament in thew orld.  This year, the Mansfield Tiger Boys, reigning 5A State Champions, outdistanced the field in route to a 6 shot victory in the weather-shortened tournament held on Fort Worth's Pecan Valley Golf Courses. Typically a 52 team, 54-hole event, the tourney was shortened to 36 holes due to lightning in the area.  Playing the Hills course, MHS posted a 2-over par 290 on day 1 and took a 5 shot lead.  Junior L. Neeley lead the Tigers with a 2-under 70.  Junior H. Frederick and senior S. DePuma posted +1 73s.    On day 2, the event moved to the River course and MHS fired a tournament low round 284 (+4) with Neeley once again shooting even par 70.  Neeley placed 3rd out of 260 players with a 2 day total of 2-under par (140).  Juniors A. Garcia (144)and H. Frederick (145) along with senior S. DePuma (146) earned top 20 finishes.  Senior B. Ellis placed in the top 25 with a 149 total.  This marks the best finish and team score by the Tigers in the tournament's history.  The varsity Tigers will return to Austin in October for the fall State Preview.  (On a side note, the "Granger" also has a history of projecting the state champion in class 4A and/or 5A, with the victor of the tournament winning state 12 of the 14 years in the tournament's existence.)

MHS JV Teams Win, 3rd at LEgacy Chick-Fil-A Challenge

Burleson (AP)-  The JV-1 and JV-2 teams played in the Legacy Chick-Fil-A Challenge at Southern Oaks GC on September 21.  The JV-1 team won the tournament with a rock solid  297 team score on the treacherous, weather-baked 6,100 yard layout.  Junior C. Barnett posted an MHS career-best 70 to earn top individual honors.  Teammate A. Wright fired 73 to place 2nd with sophomores E. Hudgins and H. Johnson touring the links in 77 strokes.  Junior W. Clark also completed the challenge in 77 swats.

The JV-2 team competed in the varsity division and ended up in 3rd place with a comforting 320 team score.  Sophomore J. Brown brought drought-ridden track to its knees with multiple birdies, finding the bottom of  the 18 cups in 75 shot.  The effort garnered the "Big Cat" a top 5 finish.  Other members of the JV-2 team were S. Cawthorne (79), N. Narcisse (83), P. Woodard (83) and S. Cleere (87).  The JV Tigers return to action on September 27 at picturesque Waxahachie CC.
