Fall 2011 Summary

Varsity Tournaments

Lady Pirate Fall Classic ~ September 30th and October 1st @ Harbor Lakes in Granbury, TX

Well our 1st tournament is in the books and what a tournament it was.  We had some highs and some lows, but we worked through some of the pressures of Varsity tournaments with our younger players and got 2 of our Varsity rookies (Campbell and Stedman) some much needed tournament experience. We also had a senior (McGahey) post a career best single day and two day total.

Now Unlike last year the weather seemed to cooperate with warmer, but windier temperatures on Day 1 and warm, somewhat calmer skies for Day 2.  Day 1 left the Lady Broncos in 7th place with a score of 369.  Lead by Junior Kellie Martin and Senior Kendall McGahey with scores of 81 and 85 respectively.  Senior Ashlan Wiley posted a 101, Junior Amber Campbell a 102 and newcomer Freshman Sabrina Stedman fought through some early round jitters to post her first high school round of 121.

Day 2 proved to be much more of a typical round of golf for the Lady Broncos.  Nerves aside and focused on the task at hand the girls fought back on Day 2 to post a 349, 20 shots better than the previous day.  Again led by Martin and McGahey with a pair of 78's, a career best for McGahey.  The scoring was followed up by Campbell with a 90 and Stedman with a 103.  This was a total improvement of 40 shots from Day 1 to Day 2.  Senior Ashlan Wiley did not play Day 2.

The Lady Broncos finished in 7th Place for the tournament, but made a tremendous turn-around from Day 1 to Day 2 and we look for good things to come from our girls as the year progresses.

North Texas Fall Intercollegiate ~ October 28th and 29th @ The Old Brickyard in Ferris, TX

Well let me preface this by stating that the weather was sooooo much better than last year, well except for the winds that is. The winding, undulated, par 70 course which is cut out of the remenants of an old brickyard (thus the name) offered some scoring opportunities and a ton of birdie opportunities.  And in keeping with tradition we had several highs and lows and several personal bests...so with out delay here we go. As a team we shot a 350 on Day 1 and a 345 on Day 2 for a 695 total (which by no means is any sort of record) and finished 16th.

Now for the important stuff, personal bests.  Junior Kellie Martin led the Lady Broncos Day 1 with a personal best 73 and finished day 2 with a 76 for a personal best tournament score of 149 (9 over for the tournament). Kellie also fought her way to the top in a tough field to finish tied for 8th. Senior Ashlan Wiley followed with a pair of 85's for a another personal best tournament score of 170.  Not to be forgotten, junior Amber Campbell also shot a personal best tournament score of 182, shooting a 92 and a 90. Junior Stephanie Hernandez and senior Kendall McGahey rounded out or varsity squad for the week with a 194 (100 & 94) and 203 (107 & 96) respectively.

Fall North Texas Two Step ~ November 4th and 5th @ Tangle Ridge G.C. and Mansfield National G.C.

Again, trying to stay with the whole improving weather from last years tournament.  When we finally got going on Day 1, we had some great golf weather.  After a significant frost delay that lasted what seemed like an eternity (2 hours) we kicked off the Fall 2011 rendition of the North Texas 2-Step with a bang.  This year we played round 1 in Grand Prairie at Tangle Ridge (Par 72) and then swapped with the boys for round 2 here in Mansfield, at the sight of the 2012 District Championship, at Mansfield National Golf Club (Par 72).  Both courses were in excellent shape and both courses offered some excellent scoring chances.

The Lady Broncos came out swinging and stood thier ground against a stellar field consisting of 18 teams, finishing 4th.  The girls shot a season best 329 on Day 1 and followed up day 2 with a 334 for a 2 day total of 663.

Again this week we had some more personal bests.  Junior Kellie Martin again led all LHS golfers with rounds of 75 and 74 for another 149 finish.  However, she finished only 5 over for the tournament, which is a personal best and finished 4th overall. Senior Ashlan Wiley also played well, improving on last weeks personal best of 170 by 8 shots to post a 162.  Ashlan also posted an 83 on day 1 and followed that up with a personal best of 79 (her first sub 80 tournament round) for round 2, earning a 16th place finish.  Junior Amber Campbell also made some noise with the teams largest improvement from last week by dropping 15 shots off her tournament best to post an 81 and an 86 for a 167 total and a top 25 place finish.  Junior Stephanie Hernandez joined the "PB Club" shooting a 90 in round 1 and a 95 on day 2 for a 185 total, which is her best 2 day tournament score.  Freshman Sabrina Stedman tied a personal best tournament round from early this season of 103 on day 1 and a 114 on day 2 for a 217 total.

Central Texas Girls Shootout ~ November 18th and 19th @ Cottonwood C.C. in Waco, TX

Well the final tournament of the year proved to be a test to our resolve and measure of our endurance.  The wind blew and boy was it it cold.  The first day of the tournament resulted in the 2nd highest team total of the fall of 368 and left the Lady Broncos in 11th place out of a field of 20 teams.  Kellie Martin lead the way with an 81.  Followed by Ashlan Wiley with a 92, Amber Campbell with a 96, Kendall McGahey with a 99, and Stephanie Hernandez with a 102.

With a good nights sleep and slightly warmer weather on Day 2 the Lady Broncos came out of the gates ready to make up some serious ground, but faltered a bit donw the stretch.  Junior Amber Campbell lead the team with the largest improvement of 9 strokes to shoot an 87 and was followed by fellow Junior Stephanie Hernandez's 7 shot improvement for an 95.  Ashlan Wiley and Kendall McGahey both shaved 1 shot and Junior Kellie Martin shot an 86 to finish 26th.

The Lady Broncos second day total of 359 was enough to sneak past Huntsville and capture 10th place and enter the off season looking forward to bigger and better things in the Spring.

Junior Varsity Tournaments

Chick-fil-A Challenge ~ October 11th @ Southern Oaks in Burleson, TX

I will use four words to describe our first JV tournament, wet, wet, wet, wet. The girls set out on Tuesday to conquer Southern Oaks following 6 inches of rain that fell in the days prior.  Conditions prove to be tough to navigate, but in the end the girls played good enough to secure the 3rd place spot.  Led by freshman Sabrina Stedman with a 110 and Raegan Arnold with a 117. Junior Addy Rivas followed them up with a 129.  Freshman Tiffany Miller shot a 132 and Sophomores Karah Craig and Sierra St. Clair shot 137 and 144 respectively.

Halloween Inviational ~ October 18th @ Indian Creek in Carrollton, TX

Brrrrrr...cold.  Well it was a little different playing in cooler weather.  The temperature dropped Tuesday as a cold front blew through.  Junior Stephanie Hernandez lead the Lady Broncos to a 3rd place finish 103 which was also good enought to tie her for 4th place overall.  Fellow Junior Addy Rivas shot a 115, Sophomore Karah Craig shot 116 and Freshman Tiffany Miller shot 120.

Byron Nelson Invitational ~ November 7th @ Trophy Club C.C. in Trophy Club, TX

Well it was a little wet and the rain threatened, but never came through. This was rough day for scoring.  We fielded a small team of only 4 girls and each gave it their all.  Senior Kendall McGahey, still working her way back from some swing trouple earlier in the year led LHS scoring with a 101.  Freshman Raegan Arnold followed with a personal best 117.  Junior Addy Rivas brought in a 118 and Freshman Tiffany Miller (fresh off her Regional Cross Country appearance) rounded out her fall schedule with a 119.

The Shootout in Mansfield ~ November 14th @ Walnut Creek C.C. in Mansfield, TX

Overall a pretty nice day with a small chance of showers that never came.  We started out with only 3 girls and lost 1 to a sore throat half way through the round.  Freshman Sabrina Stedman closed her fall season with a 107 and fellow freshman Raegan Arnold fired a career best 109 before heading to the clubhouse to hang up the cleats until spring.
