Accelerated Readers- Our students now have the added benefit of locating books according to their reading levels.  The books are coded with dots to help them choose a book that will be beneficial to their levels.  This helps them meet success and score well on their AR quizzes that they are taking.  Congratulations, Readers!

Scholastic Book Fair  2011 is coming to Cabaniss Elementary!  We will be OPEN for business on the Monday of conferences, October 10th for you to purchase gifts etc. for your students.  The children will preview the books on Friday, October 7th, and the children will be able to shop on October 11th - 14th.  We will also be open for shopping on the PTA evening of October 11th from 6:15 - 8:00 p.m.

Welcome:

Welcome to a brand new year at Cabaniss Elementary School! How quickly it has become year number four!

Thank you so much to the wonderful parents who have donated to our library. Dylan Koh and his mom did some book shelf cleaning and have added many books to the shelves.  Thank you Koh family!  We will enjoy these new additions.

Funding to the library has been cut by quite a bit this year, but the library will be doing some fund raising to help these shelves continue growing.  I attend a group, through Region xi, where I choose books, read and critique them for the publishers, and then I can purchase these same books at a large discount for The Cabaniss Library.  The books are both fiction and non fiction, and have added greatly to the shelves.

I want to thank our weekly volunteer, Mrs. Sheri Matthews for her time spent working in the library.  She is now helping us out on Tuesday through Friday!  Mrs. Matthews, Cael Richardson's mom, is also in the process of becoming Bridgette's handler!  This way, we hope to get Bridgette back on campus.  Thank you to all the children and parents who are always asking for her.  She has not been a happy camper at home because she misses everyone here! You can tell she is anxious to come back to school.  Remember that Bridgette is a certfied therapy dog, and the children will be trained in how to behave around any strange dog.

I also want to thank Mrs. Sandy Powe, Haley Sexton's grandmother and a retired elementary librarian, for coming in on Mondays and getting so many books shelved.  You rock Mrs. Powe!!  Books that are off the carts and on the shelves is a true present to The Cabaniss Library.

We do have our other wonderful animals back in the library this year.  Dolly the rabbit has returned along with Tiny the Tarantula.  Come on in and visit them and pick up a good read while you're here!

Coming soon
We are currently working with the Arlington Public Library to make plans for bringing a BOUNCING BABY program to the library.  This program will be inviting young children and the parents to school to join in a wonderful program providing emergent literacy to these little ones and wonderful experiences for their parents as well.  Stay tuned for details, please!  We are planning on getting this program started in January, and we hope to see you then!
