Student Nutrition :: Mission Statement

Support Education

Our goal to support education is accomplished through the daily serving of nutritious meals to all of our customers in Mansfield ISD and to offer nutrition education in a partnership with the established educational process.

Although we are a single department, we are in reality made up of 36 satellite restaurants serving over 3 million meals and growing.

Why is proper nutrition important?

There are numerous studies that suggest and prove a positive link between good nutrition and academic performance. Students who consume a nutritious breakfast and lunch are more likely to have increased success in the class room and in extra curricular activities. These studies suggest the following when students eat a nutritious breakfast and lunch.

  • Student improve academically

  • Students disciplinary concerns decrease
  • Students absences decrease
  • Students visits to the nurse decrease

What do these studies indicate? These studies indicate that there is a direct and positive link between proper nutrition and the success of each student. The old saying that "A body must be fed before the mind can be fed" is a very true statement.

In summary, the positive link between proper nutrition and the success of a student is truly imperative. There is another old saying that suggests, "A hungry child cannot learn." This statement speaks volumes for all students at every level.

Nutrition

Good nutrition starts with healthy, well-balanced meals but our commitment does not end with the menus. Our goal is to provide nutrition education to students so that they will have an opportunity to make healthy food decisions for a lifetime. Menus are planned to meet Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) which is 1/4 the nutrients for breakfast and 1/3 of the nutrients for lunch. Our menus are also planned to meet The School Meals Initiative (SMI) so that no more than 30 percent of calories are from fat and not more than 10 percent of calories are from saturated fat.

Our menus are progressive with our customers in mind while introducing new and exciting foods and experiences to increase their exposure to the wonderful world of food and nutrition. There are truly no "bad" foods when used in moderation and incorporated properly in a healthy meal.

In 2002-2003, the Student Nutrition Department added a full time Nutrition Coordinator to work in a partnership with each campus to increase the knowledge of students on healthy food choices. Our focus is not only to provide our students with the information that will educate them on how to make healthy food choices for a lifetime, but to also model this mission in our daily menu offerings.
