Mansfield ISD Students Among National Merit Semifinalists

[September 14, 2011]

The list of Semifinalists for the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program was announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) officials today. Approximately 16,000 high school seniors will be given the opportunity to advance in the competition to be considered for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million.

Please join us in congratulating our National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists:

Mateusz P. Dyl, Summit High School
James R. McMasters, Legacy High School
Rayna L. Smith, Mansfield High School

This year’s Semifinalists were selected from about 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools that entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of high school seniors in the U.S. and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Approximately 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the title of Merit Scholar.

NMSC, established in 1955, is a non-profit organization that offers scholarships funded by 440 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goal to honor the nation’s scholastic champions and encourage the pursuit of academic excellence.
