MISD announces Veterans Day observances at various campuses:
Elementary Schools
Charlotte Anderson Elementary - The campus will have a program on Friday, November 11th to honor Veterans Day. The Boy Scouts will present and raise the colors, then lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. They will discuss the significance of the day, and conclude with some music presented by Katherine Wilson, Anderson Music Teacher. She has taught the kids “God Bless America” and if they choose, they can sing along. Students and staff are encouraged to wear red, white and blue and will invite Veterans (family members) to join them for the service. The program will begin shortly after 8:00 a.m. in front of the school.
J.L. Boren Elementary - The campus will not hold a special event on Friday, but the students will wear red, white & blue. The students will write letters or notes of appreciation to specific family members currently serving or that have been in the military. If the students do not have service men and women in their family, they are asked to write generic notes of appreciation and the campus will give them to the Marines that do Toys for Tots and request they distribute.
Anna May Daulton Elementary - Veterans have been invited to a ceremony and continental breakfast at 7:25 a.m., on Friday, November 11th in the Library. The Daulton PTA is providing the breakfast.
Kenneth Davis Elementary - On Friday, November 11th students will celebrate Veteran’s Day at Davis Elementary with a parade.
- Notes will go home by end of this week inviting parents/grandparents/family members of their students who are Veterans to come walk with their student in the parade.
- Each of their students will receive a small US flag to wave during the parade (students will get to keep the flag to take home).
- The campus will start gathering parade participants in the library at 1:45 and will do their best to start the parade at 2:15 (after 4th grade has had time to get to enrichment, drop off backpacks and get settled in the hallway).
- The campus is inviting anyone that is a veteran to participate with them.
Carol Holt Elementary - The campus will be having a program beginning after announcements at the front of school. The Boy Scouts will present the colors and lead the students in the Pledges. All students will sing the “National Anthem” and the 4th Grade Class will sing “God Bless America.” Speaker will be Rufus Davis.
D.P. Morris Elementary - The campus is having “Lunch with a Veteran” on Friday, November 11th, from 10:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. The staff is providing lunch for visiting veterans and an opportunity to eat with our kids.
Erma Nash Elementary - Students will invite friends and family who are veterans or active military to come and join the campus in the Cafeteria on November 11th at 1:10 p.m. for pie, in honor of Veterans Day and our military.
Alice Ponder Elementary - At 9:00 on November 11, students will gather in the cafeteria to sing patriotic songs while waving American flags. We will wear red, white, and blue clothes, and are making arrangements to have the celebration transmitted/available for our students’ and staff members’ deployed relatives to view overseas. Due to space constraints, they are not inviting visitors to join in, as their student body fills the entire cafeteria area.
Tarver-Rendon Elementary
The Legacy High School color guard will present the colors at the afternoon program; our local Boy Scout troop will present the colors in the morning. The choir will sing patriotic songs while a patriotic presentation plays in the background. Our 4th graders are participating in an essay contest, “A Veteran in my Life” and two winners will read their essay at each of the programs. We also plan to have a “Wall of Honor” including pictures of veterans that are in student’s families (K-2nd at 9:00 a.m., 3rd - 4th at 2:15 p.m.).
Martha Reid Elementary - Friends, family and community members have been invited to join students for a 9:00 a.m. program in front of the school. The school theme this year is “Dream it, Believe it, Achieve it,” and we have implemented that attitude into our program. The program honors not only our Veterans but also their “Heroes" - our police officers, firemen, nurses and others. Deanna Lemke’s (Reid art teacher) brother, Jeromey Clary, who plays offensive tackle for the San Diego Chargers, generously donated t-shirts for the entire campus to wear for the program. Also, as a special guest, recording artist, Charla Corn (who recently won Female Artist of the Year by the Texas Regional Radio Music Association, and was on American Idol, Nashville Star, and a television interviewer for CMT) will be there to sing the National Anthem and God Bless America.
Elizabeth Smith Elementary - The campus is creating a “wall of honor” to display photos and information of any Stallion family members who serve/have served in the Armed Forces. The “wall” will be completed by Friday morning and the campus will invite families to come by the school at their convenience that day to see the tribute.
Cora Spencer Elementary - The campus will be studying the meaning and significance of Veterans Day, and on November 11th fourth grade students will set up a special area to honor our veterans. All Spencer students will receive a form on which they can share vital information about a veteran and return it to school. A photograph can be included, but please send only copies, not originals. These forms/pics will be posted between the gym and the office for Veterans’ Day.
