Statement on Summit High School red alert - May 23

[May 23, 2011]

Earlier this morning, the instructional setting at Mansfield Summit High School was disrupted by a situation which the school district takes very seriously. An anonymous call was taken by the campus receptionist at 9:15 AM indicating a dangerous item was somewhere in the campus parking lot. No other details were available in the call.

The students and staff at Summit High School were immediately placed in a red alert status so MISD police could begin an investigation of the situation. The Arlington Fire Department was contacted and responded immediately. Law enforcement officials conducted a primary sweep of the campus parking lot. At no time was there an indication of an actual item. After the thorough sweep at Summit HS, law enforcement officials gave the district approval at 11:15 AM to return to normal campus operations.

During the temporary red alert, students remained in the building and continued to have classes since the threat was specific to the vehicles in the parking lot. Anytime we receive information involving student safety, we act immediately and investigate as thoroughly as possible. Campus administration and law enforcement officials will continue to investigate this situation and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken on those who are found responsible.

If you have any information about this incident, please call the Mansfield ISD Police Department at 817-299-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 817-469-TIPS (8477).
