“Our goal is to increase awareness about the need for blood in Mansfield and the surrounding areas through our health initiative with the Mansfield ISD,” said Laura Irvine, President, Methodist Mansfield Medical Center. “Your blood donation to the American Red Cross can save lives and benefit patients right here in our community.”
The need for blood is constant. Every two seconds a patient in the United States needs a blood transfusion. Blood is perishable and has no substitute. Red blood cells have a shelf life of only 42 days and platelets just 5 days – they must be replenished constantly. Blood and platelets can be used for trauma victims – those who suffered due to accidents and burns – heart surgery patients, organ transplant recipients, premature babies and for patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or other diseases, such as sickle cell disease. The American Red Cross Blood Services’ mission is to fulfill these needs with the safest, most reliable, most cost-effective blood through voluntary donations.
“We invite our students, faculty, staff and the rest of the Mansfield community to give the gift of life through a donation of blood to the American Red Cross at one of the participating Mansfield schools.” said Dr. Bob Morrison, Superintendent, Mansfield ISD, “We are proud to be part of this initiative to save lives while teaching our students about the vital importance of giving back to others and our community,”
