[February 6, 2008] DECA Students Advance to State Competition

decaOn February 2, students from Ben Barber Career Tech Academy (BBCTA) represented Mansfield ISD in the District Seven UIL DECA Competition. District Seven is known as one of the largest districts in the state with over 2000 members. DECA is a student-run organization for students enrolled in marketing classes at the high school level. Over 1200 students competed for the right to advance to the state level competition, which will be held in Corpus Christi at the end of February.

BBCTA had 18 students win in 23 areas and will advance on to the state level with hopes of advancing to the National level in May. The students were required to pass a rigorous written exam and then compete in a role-play competition in front of industry judges.

The following students will represent the district at the state competition:

Karie Justice - Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making
Taylor Stephens - Learn and Earn Written Event

Summit High School
Omar Padilla - Financial Analysis Marketing
Brenda Padilla - Financial Analysis Marketing and Job Interview Event
Zach Nuss - Sports and Entertainment Marketing
Kait Meehan - Learn and Earn Written Event
Shannon Murphy - Full Service Restaurant Management and Job Interview Event

Mansfield High School
Chris Donavon - Sports and Entertainment Marketing with Bryan Brush as Alternate
Richard Haifley - Restaurant Full Service Management
Ana Garza - Restaurant Full Service Management
Clayton Halaska - Hotel and Lodging Management
Breonna Williams - Quick Serve Restaurant Management
Kristie Martin - Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making
Emily Linton - Marketing Management
Ana Garza - Elected to serve as DECA District 7 Secretary

Legacy High School
Justin Safar - Automotive Services Marketing
Cali Boswell - Business Services Marketing, Branding Event, and won the nomination of District 7 to run for DECA State Secretary

The students are beginning to prepare to compete in the state of Texas February 28, 2008 in Corpus Christi with the hopes to going on to Internationals in Atlanta, GA in May.

The students will hold a pasta dinner on February 19 at Ben Barber to help raise money for their State Competition.
