The students and staff at Thelma Jones Elementary celebrated diversity with a parade of flags around the school. The project and parade was the product of a grant sponsored by the Mansfield ISD Education Foundation entitled "A United Nation of Diversity."
A total of 57 flags were presented, flown and marched around the campus exterior as students looked. Each flag was created to represent the origins of the student population at Thelma Jones.
"Our country was built on diversity...the melting pot, said school principal Karl Bethel. "We need to recognize that we bring with us all the good, the bad, the accomplishments, and the failures of the countries that we have come from to make it to Thelma Jones Elementary. I want all of our kids, parents, teachers, and staff to know that no matter where we are from, it is our duty and responsibility to make the place we call home better by our presence. We can only do this by celebrating the diverse backgrounds we bring from our country of origin and the historical implications of that those countries flags represent."
The flags are on display at the school.
Prinicpal's Thanks - MISD Education Foundation, Randall Canedy for his sponsorship of the grant, administration, my fellow grant writers (Gema Padgett, Mekasha Brown, Dana Ashbacher, and Susan Tedford), JR ROTC Tiger Battalion Honor Guard from Mansfield High School, and most importantly our teachers, parents, and students who embrace and live daily being a United Nation of Diversity here at Thelma Jones Elementary.
